Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom, loving yourself is the beginning of all happiness acting is the beginning of all accomplishments
I have volunteered in the 9/11 unit walk for peace, a big event in Washington DC, that gathered people from different ethics and religions, to listen to inspiring speakers coming from all around the world, and then walk together visiting different religious monuments in the area to share ideas and experiences.
The event started in a big conference room, people were there waiting for the speakers. Despite the beautiful African music playing, the atmosphere was very intense and people were barely looking to each other’s or talking. I felt it strange and against the whole concept of the event which is about been open and tolerant.
Among all, I went on the stage and I started dancing, happy and free, alone for few minutes. Before I have realized that almost the whole conference room joined me in my dance, or clapping hands. The atmosphere has totally changed, not only during the group dance but the whole day. We have made very strong connections that day.
Ghandi ‘s little son who was present, told me:” you made me believe that small acts can make a difference”. I had to endure with my sisters and mom is mockery for days after, as the event was on stream and everyone saw it, they said:”We didn’t know you missed Tunisian folklore that much that you started dancing unconsciously “
It is a simple act. It means nothing, but I did it because I wanted to, and it was obvious I was enjoying it to the maximum. I was convinced about what I am doing and I didn’t care what people may think.
A quote that I strongly believe in says:” Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”
And that’s how I have chosen to live my life.
Many people that day told me that I thought about what you did, that they wished they did it. Most of the excuses I have heard weren’t: “I don’t know how to dance, or I have shame… “As some of them were professional dancers and actors. They were just doubtful, so they didn’t act.
That’s why I believe that it’s a good start to have the knowledge or the idea, that you know you can do it. But what makes the difference is what you really do. If you don’t act, it’s not even worth thinking.
When I started working for NGOs and travelling a lot, I always wished I had a small device where I can save all my music, books and take it with me wherever I go. I repeated it a lot this idea as a nagging, a wish, until Steve Jobs launched the Ipad. He didn’t steal my idea but I didn’t act, and that made the whole difference. Imagine I am the one creating the Ipad now!!!
Many people have dreamed, have great capacities… yet they didn’t act. What you need to go out of the box, dare to change your career, move to a new place, start all over again… what you need in order to fight for your beliefs and be yourself in a society that wants to change you… what you need is more than an idea or faith… what you need is to Act.
My journey has more coming. I still have new knowledge to learn, challenges to break and a lot of achievements to accomplish. I am not sure if I will be conforming to the success standards of people, whether they are going to appreciate what I do, like me or not… But I am sure that I made each second of my life worth living because I was integer. I have been faithful to who I am and did what I truly find the right thing. And in my judgment day, I will meet God with much faith because I gave it all my best to share my gifts with the world.
